| With finances being a bit tight many homeowners are choosing to stay in their homes and do some repairs or upgrades. Replacing your kitchen cabinet doors is one way to make a dramatic upgrade to your home without having to spend a fortune to do so. With the kitchen becoming the meeting hub of our households our cabinetry can take a beating and this is especially true of the cabinet doors. Every time someone needs something the doors are opened and if you have children then you know that closing any door ends with a slam.
This wear and tear can necessitate the need for new drawer and drawer fronts and new kitchen hardware such as hinges or drawer slides. So what do you need to know before you buy new kitchen cabinet doors? First you should determine whether you need to buy new doors or if it is possible to reface your current cabinet doors? If your current doors and drawer fronts are made from quality wood then it is possible to sand them, stain and seal them. If refacing is not an option for you then you need to decide which type of door you would like. For example there are thermo foil doors that are available; these doors are made with having MDF covered with vinyl. This is a cost effective way to upgrade your kitchen doors and they have many colors and wood grains to choose from. However if you want to go with wood doors for your cabinets you need to decide which species of wood you like. There are some woods that should be avoided in the kitchen, for example pine is way too soft to hold up to the rigors of the kitchen area. Other woods available that work fantastically in the kitchen include cherry, oak, maple and hickory. These woods can be left natural or stained with the difference between them being the grain of the wood. For example oak is a hard wood with a coarse grain, this means that you are going to have lots of varying colors in the wood and also means that any stain you use will take darker or lighter in some areas. This naturally occurring color difference is the beauty of using real wood. However if you would like less grain you can choose a maple. Maple is a softer wood and the grain is much less course which will give you a more even grain and help it to look a bit more uniformed. Once you have decided on the type of door then you need to decide on the style. You can go with a common raised panel for a traditional style or you could choose a shaker style for a more country style door, this is just a matter of preference. There are many places to purchase your new kitchen cabinet doors. Many can find them at your local cabinet shop or you can order them from a national chain. Remember when you order your new doors that you may also need new hinges which Blum or Grass have a good selection. While you are replacing your kitchen cabinet doors don't forget to add a great looking handle or knob to the door, this will add the final touch to your magnificent looking kitchen.
